My Favourite Fall Winter 2020/21 Trends | What I'm Wearing

Collage of Fall Winter 2020/21 fashion trends and outfit ideas, modelled by Ellie.
Well hello there; it's gone rather chilly outside hasn't it? Now this year there isn't an awful lot of going out and not many the person we'll be seeing in our everyday outfits, nevertheless, styling up for the season is something I thoroughly enjoy and a challenge I find adds that little bit of fun and excitement to my everyday dressing! I appreciate we may not all be looking for the latest style trends to easily incorporate into our daily outfits but nevertheless there's still Winter walks, weekly shops and running festive errands where possible, and also the days in work if you get to wear your own clothes you lucky duck! I much prefer wearing my own clothes to work, I feel a little bit more me and a little less afar from myself and my loves. As with every season, I delight in creating a list of all the latest trend predictions and styles potentially to take flight in the coming months, straight from the fashion week catwalks. Although maybe a smaller rotation of outfits this season, due to busy work, there's some trends I have been obsessing over and practically wearing almost every day! So, if like me you find it jolly and love to be in the style know for the season and want some easy hints and outfit ideas to wear this end of Autumn/ Winter ahead, look no further my friend!

My top Fall/ Winter 2020/21 trends I have been loving...

Black on Black

Ellie posed in black, on trend colour for AW20/21, skirt suit, paired with white pussy bow shirt and jumper, thick black tights and chucky, high heel, black PVC boots. Wearing hair down in a long bob, full fringe and a red lip.
This year's Autumn/ Winter catwalk was most intriguing as of course COVID hit just as fashion weeks across the globe began! I feel like all time has merged and become a blur because I can't clearly define in my head if it was the AW20/21 fashion weeks back in Spring that began and went all awry and then digital or if it was the fashion weeks for SS21 this September. Alas, writing that out I believe it was this season's fashion weeks that went awry with COVID back in Spring as I remember pin pointing the trends ready to start spotting on the digital catwalks and, I don't believe we've even had a fashion week this Autumn for SSS21 - correct me if I'm wrong! 😲Back to this AW202/21 nevertheless, a statement theme I noticed in this AW20/21 's looks and a trend I highlighted was the colour black. Plain, simple, sophisticated black. Think Channel and YSL, in black. I've been pairing lots of basic 'smart but not too smart' outfits and other style trends with black pieces to create that sophisticated yet simple, clean theme, while still opting for complete comfort.

These outfits have to be Animal Crossing playing-friendly you know! Or sit in the old desk chair for hours blogging-friendly too.

As shown in the picture, I was really chuffed piecing together this black outfit as it ticked all the AW20/21 trend boxes for me, whilst being comfy and early Winter weather appropriate. Tied in with the collared theme, talked about further below, I paired a white pussy bow with a thick white jumper, to break up and 'shoulder waist hips' (a micro trend this Autumn/ Winter) the black skirt suit I put together (another micro trend for Fall/ Winter 2020/21). Paired with my giant black PVC boots and a statement red lip, that seemed to be quite favourable on the catwalk for this season, I was rain and artic chill ready with confidence! (And of course paired with the highest denier tights you can find, for those brief moments of outdoor escapism).

Big, Bad Boots

Feet posed side on, in walking stance, showcasing big black boots trend.
So an undercurrent - big, bad boots. Black boots, white boots, chunky boots, riding boots, you name it, we've seen them all over Instagram. I know the chunky boot trends has seen a few variations in regular appearances over recent years but I was so made up to see it come back this AW20/21.

There's just something about a statement black boot that does it all and it makes my fashion-loving heart swoon!

This year we're looking at midi to high calf rise and more simplicity and elegance. Plain and simple. No embellishment needed. Just a statement chunky sole it you wish. I did pick up on the smart boot trend earlier this year on the AW20/21 catwalk so mine are paired with an ode to both this Fall/ Winter's runway and the Instagram girls of Style File High.

A Touch of the 40s

Ellie, poses smiling in 40's styled white pussy bow shirt and baby blue jumper and round midi skirt, paired with dainty white gloves, camel beige smart coat, cream handbag, black tights, pointed toe black slip on shoes and hair styled with 40s twists and a red lip.
Next up is my most favourite trend of them all... a sprinkle of 1940s! I've always been a sucker for all things vintage and my heart truly see's it's self somewhere between the Agent Carter of Captain America's heart and in a little 1930's/ 40s house, somewhere not too far from home, with wavy curls and victory rolls. If I had to pick one, my most iconic and favourite looks of this AW20/21 catwalk was hands down the Bella Hadid look in that white and red polka dot 40s wrap dress. That is what dreams are made of. ❤ Throughout Autumn I've been taking snippets of 40s style and adding it to my looks, both for the full vintage feel and playing around with other trends - there's three other trends, two being micro trends, in this outfit. Can you pick them out? I've kept it simple with a straight 40s collar and jumper and tonal baby blue and sprinkled a touch of both vintage and warmth with a midi skirt and brown smart camel coat. In my eyes, you can never go wrong with a dash of vintage any season and this is one I sure love even more around Christmas time! Layered up with roll necks for added warmth, think waist and stand tall in trousers or wrap up with mid-length skirts. For the ultimate 40s glam and a little micro trend I saw on the catwalk, especially featured by Bella Hadid and models at the Rodarte show, I paired my outfit with some little white gloves, the perfect 40s accessory for the Winter months.

Other 1940s micro trends the AW20/21 runways inspired me with and would be most fun to play around with in your daily outfits include vintage earrings, 40s style shoes, thin tights and midi box bags.

40's Hair
Close up, side on shot of Ellie, showing 40s hair twists with bobby pin to secure.
Paired with the 1940s styles I saw on the runway was a touch of vintage to the models hair. From victory rolls to curls, there was certainly a nod to the strong women of the era and an uncanny resemblance to the difficult times we face today, as we did then, yet keeping calm and carrying on. On a whim one morning I needed to get my hair out of my face and didn't have a bobble to hand so I threw back my front pieces of hair in twists and pinned them back with bobby pins. To my amazement it looked ever so 40s and I absolutely loved the look - they also held my hair in place really well. Since, I've really been enjoying adding a simple touch of 40s to my hair too.

Top tip: Keep it quick and keep it simple, simply to get your hair out of your face and crack on with your day just like the busy working gals of the 40s helping to keep our world turning.

The Bigger the Collar the Better
Framed shot of Ellie's pouting red lip, white vintage detailed collar and striped orange and white T-shirt layered over, that reads "Bonsoir" in black font, with the letters o in heart shapes..
Street style trend alert * Now here's a trend I'm sure you've seen this Fall! Take me back to 2012, where it's all things collars with jumpers and soft grunge, any day. The collar appears to have made quite the comeback after being gone for some eight years and it's back with all eyes on it, centre of attention. There seems to be one be all and end all white shirt with a drippy vintage detailed collar, possibly from Zara or Topshop, that every fashion-grammer and their nan has been loving this fall and I must say, I'd fall head over heels for it too. Digging the old collared shirts out of my collection, I have been absolutely loving pairing them with all sorts. From T-shirts to jumpers, the more fun and the more extravagance the better this season! With drama and, albeit still simple and sophisticated, extravagance being a theme popping up all over the runways for AW20/21 it makes for the perfect little detail to play around with and have fun with your everyday outfits.

Full outfit shot of Ellie, wearing white vintage collar detailed shirt; orange and white horizontally striped T-shirt over top, that says "Bonsoir"; rust coloured mini skirt, with central gold buttons; thick black tights; black pointed toe slip on shoes; and black floppy hat, which Ellie is holding with her right hand to her head.

Vintage Jewellery

Close up shot of Ellie holding hair back to show Forever21 big diamante vintage earrings.
With snippets of micro trends spurting off the 40s theme on the runways showcasing the AW20/21 trends, vintage jewellery pieces were something I saw an undercurrent of in a lot of outfits. Plain and simply elegant, sometimes statement but in the most understated and classic ways. I really loved this emerging theme for this Fall and Winter because it was like a little piece of sentimentality to me. In a year where we're there's been so much loss and a time we're all focusing on saving our pennies there's just something special about adding a touch of sparkle to our everyday outfits with timeless pieces that maybe remind us of loved ones or signify reliving the old and repurposing vintage pieces rather than buying new. In the year where I've said and learnt the most that life is for living, I've been loving wearing my giant Fovever21 diamante earrings balls to the wall without a hoot of lack of confidence in flaunting them. They've been adding such a wonderful flare of vintage fun yet elegance to some of my everyday outfits and bringing me a bit of cheer in these gloomier times.

Smart Oversized Coats

A big trend we've seen many a year before is oversized coats, again in various styles. This year I noted things weren't so crazy and quite so 'puffy' as previous years. Oversized coats again had a 40s current to them. Smart and dashing yet with room to spare and wrap up. My camel coat has lasted me numerous years and although it's a little on the shorter side I've found it pairs really well with the transpired AW20/21 trends and doesn't take away from the statement of the AW20/21 styles. Think smart and warm, paired with a glove or hat, walking down a snowy cobbled street somewhere on a Christmas 1940's evening. Again another versatile trend, easily and perfectly paired with others like the vintage themes, all black and skirt suiting statement style.

Switching up my boots I opted for a pointed toe shoe, another trend that footed the AW20/21 runways. I wore this a lot on the warmer less wild Autumn days of 2020 but nevertheless they've been perfect to just slip on quickly and run an errand where needs must in the colder days, paired with thick socks or tights.

If you finding the weather a little less forgiving though a pointed boot would be a lovely way to pair the two shoe trends of AW20/21 together.

Full, Long, Dramatic Skirts

Ellie posed with left hand on left hip, modelling all beige outfit, featuring dramatic, big midi skirt. Paired with beige roll neck, camel smart coat, thick black tights and chunky, high heel, PVC black boots.
Pairing together with the class, elegance, simplicity, yet fun and extravagance of this Fall and Winter's style trends, the full, long, dramatic skirt is a trend I also adored on this AW20/21 's runways. Seen in various shows, shirts and dressing had bellowing big skirts, with endless swooshing volume. On the contrary, in this gloomy restricted time I felt as though there was something so fun about donning a big skirt or a grand dress, paired with a cosy jumper or thermal roll neck and just rocking your everyday best Channel YSL princess around the house, being it cooking, cleaning or Animal Crossing. As my collection of clothes is partially spread between my home and my partner's I've  been limited to two, statement still though, midi skirts. Regardless though I've enjoyed endless creativity and fun pairing them both in various on trend outfits and have adored the fun it just brings to an everyday ensemble. Besides I've gone for a beige-on-beige look with the oversized coat and big boot. The length of a full and dramatic skirt is a perfect way to add warmth to your Fall and Winter outfits without having to live on repeat in the same thermal leggins or high-waisted jeans. Pair them with the highest denier tights you own and your snug as a bug in a rug but fit to fool anyone you could be on your way to fashion week. Keep it simple on the top to make for a comfy OOTD, like I've done here with my basic roll neck.

It's been a strange year in many ways and, in all honesty, I found it for the first time a little difficult to pick out some standout styles and trends this season. It felt as though everyone's runways and collections were a little bit mish mashed, like a piece of sophisticated suiting from 2018/19 but also fun and a touch of 80s again from 2018, but with a sprinkle of 2012 collared throwbacks added in by the fashionistas of the season and yet a mix from the designers between very smart and very 'cas', with a bit of pattern mixing thrown in and throwbacks from runways of years previous throughout.

What strangely stood out the most though was how this resembled the year to come and the mish mash it has been, both being very serious yet people trying to find small pleasures in things of times gone by and little snippets of fun to treasure in everyday life.

And there it is... My top comfy, cosy and stylish trends and outfit ideas for the end of Autumn and Winter ahead.
