It's Halloween! Whether your reading this, this 'alloween morning or party planning a week in advance, I've put together a little buffet of easy-peasy ideas for an all vegan Halloween buffet, perfect for your own little Halloween bash that you can grab right from the supermarket. This year I wanted to write a blog post to to show how easy it can be to veganise your annual Halloween party and help those of you looking for vegan options this Halloween, with easy-peasy picks you can find right at your local shops. So after five years of being vegan and more than one crappy alternative cheese option in the supermarket these days, I got a little creative (okay maybe not that creative haha) and have put together a fully vegan Halloween buffet for all your spooky free-from party needs!

For the spells to a delicious Halloween bash, look no further...

A witch's cauldron pot of treats, with a pot of melted chocolate. A brain shaped watermelon, cut into bites, on white plate.

Just a little disclaimer here, I am not claiming that any of these little Halloween themed food ideas are my own. I have no clue if anyone has made or used these before so credit to them, these were just ideas I sprouted off the top of my head!

Pierce the Pineapple

Because why not? Being a little thrifty and using what I've got, I thought as an alternative to cheesy pineapples why not pineapples on sticks? Then you can go cheesy or not, whatever you wish. Stabbed into an apple, which can be sliced later and dipped in melted chocolate - or made into candy apples!, they make for the perfect little appetiser and a theme appropriate decoration for the Halloween spread.

Dipping Fingers

A simple twist on the classic bread stick! Mine are just Aldi's offerings.Be sure to give the ingredients label a read and watch out for milk. Add an array of dips (a head's up that not all guacamole is vegan but Aldi's is), I chose Aldi's guacamole and sweet chili Hummus, and you've got yourself some finger food!

Bleeding Hearts

Can you guess? Beetroot! I know right, hard to believe, haha. Sometimes I think it's nice to add a little beetroot to buffet salads or as a nice little side and the bleeding effect of beetroots just adds a very appropriate Halloween touch to any Halloween party buffet. Using a butter knife I carefully cut mine into hearts. Although they aren't the best, the poorly cut look to them does add to the theme so don't feel disheartened (see what I did there) if your not a dab hand at cutting out the shapes!

Sausage Rolls

As they are, you can't have a buffet without a sausage roll can you? These are Asda's finest, their free from sausage rolls, however I can't find them online to link to. Nevertheless, there's the Walls Tasty Vegan Jumbo RollsPukka Vegan Sausage Rolls and Asda and Aldi both have frozen alternatives ready to cook, which once cooked you could serve hot or cold. Likewise I'm sure lots of familiar supermarkets will do their own brand of meat free sausage rolls these days too, just look in their dedicated free from chilled sections. I simply cut mine into bite sized pieces to serve.
*Side note: I would actually cook these sausage rolls and serve hot or cooled down as the crispy pastry will make them extra tasty!

Trick O' Cheese Parcels

As the name suggests, these are little bites of Asda Free From Mature Cheddar Alternative wrapped in Quorn Vegan Chicken Free Slices. You can get so many vegan cheese options in the supermarkets today so there's more than likely a free from cheese option in your local supermarket too.

Hoops O' Doom

Yes.. Hoola Hoops but the name was cute. These are some I grabbed from Aldi but you can get them almost anywhere and there's so many different options of vegan crisps out there. Just check the label. Although these aren't labelled vegan lots are so check the ingredients on the back and you'll be surprised.

Witches Cauldron

Now this one I was quite excited for. Grab your cauldron of choice and fill it with a dipping selection of your heart's treat desires. I filled mine with popcorn (Asda Sweet Popcorn), chocolate buttons (Asda Free From Choc Buttons), Skittles (they usually say vegan somewhere on the packet) and fizzy worms (Jealous Sweets Zingy Medley). I wanted to add marshmallows too, of which you can get Dandies vegan marshmallows from Asda, however my local store had run out. Go large and let your guests of doom scoop out their treats or you can make mini cauldrons fit for one. Pair with a side of melted chocolate (I used some of the buttons) and pour over your treats or dip at your desire.

Coffin Slices

A cute little twist on your regular sandwich. For this one I literally threw together some cucumber sandwiches to use up what I already had in and cut them into coffin shapes. You can get two coffins out of one sandwich and, the joy is, you can fill them with any sandwich filling you like! Go jam and make it bloody if you dare!

Watermelon Brain Bites

You've heard of watermelon sugar but have you heard of watermelon brain bites? This one was actually a bit of an accident. When I attempted to make vegan tuna last week - I know, don't ask, it failed miserably - I noticed that half my sliced up water melon looked a little brain like, so I decided to throw one into the Halloween buffet of course! With cocktails sticks to side, party nibblers can stab a brain bite or two and they're good to go.

A Little Bonus!

And for a wee bonus I thought it would be nice to jot down some evening ideas for the day its self, whether it be a gathering with friends or a cosy night in. I am currently quite under the weather and won't be going anywhere this evening but I am very much enjoying a day under a blanket with a cosy day-long Halloween movie marathon (and Strictly tonight of course). Here's some little ideas you could enjoy as the dark draws in this evening too...

  • Watch some scary movies
  • Watch some spooky YouTube - one of my personal faves, Exploring With Josh and his abandoned videos
  • Halloween cake decorating - grab or make a bunch of cupcakes, put out a spread of anything you fancy to decorate them with and all make you own terrifically topped cupcakes to enjoy. If you haven't seen it, here's my latest recipe, Cinnamon Spiced Biscoff Cupcakes, that could be just perfect for this with a Halloween twist
  • A selection of games - Boom Boom Balloon would be a great pick for a frighteningly themed evening
  • What's in the box? - a reinvention of the old classic I think we've all played at some point in our childhoods at a Halloween party. For a bit more of a grown up version, and in all honestly a good laugh if nothing else, mix up the prizes. Why not sneak a mystery token in one of the boxes for a spookily good takeout dessert or pizza on the host!
  • And on that note, why not order dessert for delivery and cosy up together with a good film and a treat of a take out dessert

And that's just some little ways you can enjoy this evening, making a vegan Halloween as easy as pie! Have a treatful evening and if you have a new blog post up share it with me in the comments below as after my next very late Halloween blog post I'm spending the afternoon reading everyone's latest posts for the foreseeable of my duvet day.

Happy Halloween!

    1. Aww, Amie thank you very kindly! I loved it but it ended up being a bit rushed as I was so unwell over Halloween. I wish the pictures turned out better and it looked a little fancier but hey ho. There's always next year to try again.

It was delicious though! Quite the treat and the perfect accompaniment for my Halloween duvet day movie marathon, haha.

  3. We don't celebrate Halloween but it just happened my husband went to do the food shopping on the 1st November so came home from the supermarket with lots of reduced sweets lol. We had one bag which had these hard boiled sweets a bit like circles of rock from the seaside. One of the designs had spiders but they reminded me of Soot Sprites from the Studio Ghibli films.

I don't really like proper scary films but we've watched things like Coco on Halloween in previous years. Pre-kids I used to watch Nightmare Before Christmas - it's sort of a Halloween film and a Christmas film right (yes I am one of those people who starts playing Christmas music on 1st November lol)
